  1. KUTANI NDZI TWA RITO
Henceforth blessed are those who die in the Lord. Yes indeed the Spirit proclaims, for they will be eternally relieved from their earthly burdens. Amen!
  2. XIKHONGELO XA HOSI
The Lord’s Prayer as taught by Jesus Christ and artistically interpreted by S J Khosa.
  3. MINTIRHO YA VULAVULA
(Deed’s Speak) Deeds communicate in a universal language, understood by everyone. Be still, and deeds themselves shall speak. Commendable deeds never hide, they are evident to all.
  4. KALICHI YA ELIYA
(Elijah’s Chariot of Fire) A chariot of fire emerged from heaven to fetch Elijah, the servant of God, and took him to heaven.
  5. I YESU N’WANA WA XIKWEMBU
(It’s Jesus the Son of God) Christ came to this treacherous world, to be persecuted; stabbed, murdered with sinners, despite his innocence.
  6. MATIMBA YA VUYIMBELERI
(The Power of Music / Singing) Arguably S J Khosa’s epitome of musical talent. This song extols the power of music and singing: an art form to be savoured. In the absence of music there is conflict. Where there is music, peace reigns. Hatred, evil, violence: The power of music triumphs over all these and ushers in harmony.
  7. O YESU MURHANDZIWA, NDZA KU NAVELA
(Oh Jesus My Beloved, I Yearn for You) The composer expresses his yearning for Jesus, whom he perceives as the royal Way to the Father’s heaven.
  8. JOSEFA N’WAMILORHO
We read in the Holy Book about Joseph the gifted Dreamer. Out of envy, his brothers sold him to Ishmael’s tribe. Ironically he ended up being the Egyptian Pharaoh’s favourite servant and sold corn back to them during an extended drought.
  9. WHEN THE ROAD IS VERY NARROW
When the road is very narrow we shall kneel down and pray.
  10. RIBYE RA XITSUNDZUXO
(A Memorial Tomb Stone) A memorial tomb stone expresses great everlasting love. The original memorial stone was placed over Rachel’s grave by Jacob, with great eternal love. Amen to genuine love.
  11. KU KATEKILE L’A NGA FAMBIKI HI MDLELA YA VADYOHI
(Blessed is he who avoids the path of the Evil Ones) Blessed is he who avoids the ways of the wicked, steering clear of the cynical and the sinful. Choosing to live within Jehovah’s law, using it as a spiritual compass day and night.
  12. MOYA WANGA NO 1
(My Soul, Number 1) My Soul desires to praise you, my Lord. Reign in my heart. Hallelujah to Jehovah. Amen!!
  13. TINGALAVA TA MAPUTO
(The Boats of Maputo) The composer relates the wonderful experience he had watching the boats of Maputo (Capital of Mozambique), conveying cargo and passengers in a manner marvellous to behold. Very expressive.
  14. NGOPFU-NGOPFU HLAYISA MBILU YA WENA
(Above all Take Care of Your Heart) Your heart is your life’s shield, your fountain of life. Avoid a wayward tongue and treacherous mouths. Marshall all of your body parts righteously, turning neither right nor left.
  15. HOSI N’WAMINTWA WA VUMBIRHI
The song celebrates the investiture of Queen N’wamitwa II, the fi rst modern queen in the Gaza Kingdom. She is acknowledged as divinely anointed, imbued with heavenly wisdom which she enhanced by travelling the world. The N’wamitwa Clan is exhorted to ULULATE!!
  16. MOON OF THE NIGHT
Key messages on the vicissitudes of human life: the dark side, the bright side. Ups and downs. Life is like that.
  17. YEHOVHA I MURISI WA MINA
(The Lord is my Shepherd) Psalm 23 as artistically interpreted by the composer, S J Khosa.
  18. FAMBAN’ KAHLE
(Bon Voyage) This is a hilarious “fare thee well song”. Safe journey wished whilst reminiscing above the joy and laughter that characterized the preceding visit. The provisions are in the form of prayer followed by a rousing bon voyage!!

ABOUT 'AND THEN I HEARD A VOICE'

BY DR SHALATI JOSEPH KHOSA (SJ)

As is the case with many talented musicians S J Khosa’s musical talent found early expression and imprimatur in the church. Initially from Canadian Assemblies of God Missionaries at Merwe; and then from the ubiquitous Swiss Missionaries who loomed so large in the then Northern Transvaal (now Limpopo) at Shingwedzi.

Later on, through Professor H W E Ntsanwini and Dr Robert (a Swiss missionary medical doctor), Shalati Joseph Khosa was to be awarded a scholarship to study Brass Band Music at Lausane in Switzerland.

I have thus far managed to collect over sixty hymns and spirituals composed by S J, a selection of which are on this disc. Some of these were composed towards the end of his life: Ndzi Navela Ekaya Ra La Hinhla (I am yearning for my Heavenly Home) and Kutani ndzi Twa Rito ri Ku: Tsala!! (And then I heard a (divine) voice saying: Write!!) have the aura of someone ready to meet his Creator.

The legendary Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society have given S J’s spirituals and hymns immensely great expression. Yours to savour and derive divine inspiration.

A sprinkling of S J’s classics such as Mintirho ya Vulavula (Deeds Speak), Matimba Ya Vuyimbeleri (The Power of Singing/Music), Famban Kahle (Fare Thee Well) and traditional songs like Tingalava ta Maputo (The Boats of Maputo) render the collection a delightful musical mosaic.

WORKS OF THE LATE DR SJ KHOSA BY IMILONJI KANTU CHORAL SOCIETY

The late Dr S J Khosa was a friend of Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society precisely because of how the choir handled his compositions.

Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society in its 34 years of existence took up a challenge to immortalize this great composer of our times. His sense of rhythm and syncopation was beyond any other modern composer we know of. He was able to capture the rhythmic patterns of the Tsonga people giving insight into the their musical culture, tradition and customs.

Before his passing on he seemed to concentrate more on religious themes. This recording will reveal what we have always known and are proud of - Dr S J Khosa was a very committed musician who brought to life diverse music compositions, giving a true understanding and a profound appreciation regarding Christian feelings and commitment to religious beliefs.

The orchestrations by Mark Cheyne infuse a western texture into the musical magic of Dr S J Khosa. This is a must recording of the old and new schools music competitions repertoire and we are hoping to bring these memories to our audiences.
